SAFETY ADVICE

Paddle Northern Ireland wants everyone to enjoy safe paddling!

We have a wide range of information, resources and training available to keep you safe on the water and for new paddlers we have a list of basics to consider before you paddle.

GET THE SKILLS: to make sure you get the most of your paddling journey we would always recommend starting with a club, course or instructor or leader who can help develop your paddling skills and technique to suit your ability and goals.

IDENTIFY YOUR CRAFT: Before you go on the water you should label your craft with your name, contact number and/or car registration number.

WEAR A PFD – BUOYANCY AID/LIFEJACKET: Being safe on the water starts with always wearing your PFD (buoyancy aid/lifejacket). A properly fitted lifejacket/PFD feels snug and comfortable to wear. Find one that suits you and your needs and always purchase from a reputable brand or retailer.

DRESS FOR THE CONDITIONS: Ensure you are wearing appropriate clothing for the conditions and water temperature, what to wear is subject time of year, type of activity, skill level and environment. What to wear on the water.

LET SOMEONE KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: always let someone know before you go, tell them where you are going, your departure point and when you intend to return. If you change your plans, let them know.

KNOW YOUR LIMITS: Paddle within your limits – and that includes your craft, your experience, the conditions on the day and your level of skills. Be realistic about your fitness and capabilities and save strength for the return journey.

CHECK THE WEATHER: Familiarise yourself with weather conditions and download a weather app. Are there any weather warnings in the area or conditions that may affect your journey? Wind speed and direction, sea state and tide times should all be considered.

ENSURE YOU HAVE A MEANS OF COMMUNICATION: Have a reliable means of communication, such as a mobile phone in a waterproof bag or a VHF radio.
